Artist: Joseph Holston

 

Joseph Holston, an acclaimed American artist, is known for his captivating depictions of the African American experience. With vibrant colors and expressive lines, he uses a cubist-abstractionist style in his paintings and prints. Over 50 years, Holston has worked with various mediums such as oil painting, etching, silk screen, and collage. Growing up in the Black community of Hawkins Lane in Chevy Chase, Maryland, he developed a deep connection to his Black identity, reflecting in his artwork. Later, the Holston family moved to Washington, DC, to study commercial art at Chamberlain Vocational High School. He worked as a commercial artist and illustrator from 1964 to 1970 while pursuing independent art studies in the Washington, DC area.
