Artist: James Denmark

James Denmark, born in 1936, grew up in a talented family of artists in segregated Winter Haven, Florida. He showed a natural talent for art at a young age. While studying at Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, Denmark studied under the direction of art historian Samella Lewis. He then moved to New York City to attend the Pratt Institute of Fine Art, where he obtained a master's degree and studied under Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence introduced him to Romare Bearden, who became his greatest inspiration. After completing his studies, Denmark began experimenting with "Collage" and continues to explore this technique.
