Artist: Ellis Wilson

Ellis Wilson gained recognition for his realistic and dignified paintings of African American subjects. His father's primitive style of painting inspired Wilson. Growing up in Mayfield, Kentucky, Ellis took on odd jobs while seeking creative outlets. As a janitor at a dress shop, he used cleaning soap to draw pictures on the store window, which became a promotional strategy. Wilson enrolled at Kentucky State University but left after two years due to limited fields of study. He moved to Chicago, where he obtained a degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1923 and participated in the Chicago Art League.
