Artist: Bernard Hoyes
Bernard Hoyes, a Jamaican artist, was influenced by rural Jamaican revival cults and rituals. He moved to NYC at 15, studied art at the Art Students League and Vermont Academy, and played a role in establishing social and cultural programs at the Academy. Hoyes received the Frederick Stanley Art Award and a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the California School of Arts and Crafts. In the 1970s, he focused on his "Rag Series" representing his artistic journey. In the 1980s, he created works reflecting his Afro-Caribbean roots and women's roles in African Spirituality and Christianity. Hoyes has had solo exhibitions, painted murals in LA, and curated exhibitions at the Museum of African American. His "Revival Series" has received national and international awards, and his artwork is collected worldwide.
