Artist: Annie Lee
Annie Lee (1935-2014) was an African-American artist known for her unique style of capturing everyday life through body language rather than facial features. Her notable paintings, including Blue Monday and My Cup Runneth Over, showcased her talent. Originally from Gadsden, Alabama, she discovered her passion for painting at a young age while growing up in Chicago. Despite personal hardships, Lee pursued art professionally at 40 while working as a chief clerk at Northwestern Railroad. Her artwork, characterized by lively personalities and the absence of facial features, reflected her own experiences and observations. Lee established the Annie Lee and Friends Gallery in Glenwood, Illinois, providing a platform for her artwork and other talented artists. Her paintings gained exposure through TV shows like The Cosby Show and A Different World. Lee preferred gallery shows and school visits over public appearances. Eventually, she relocated from Chicago to Las Vegas, and her painting "Six No Uptown" inspired a play of the same name in 2014.
